BATMAN SCENE COMPARISON Vincent Ruggiero The well known story of Batman and one of his arch enemies, the Joker, is well known by people of all age groups. Introducing the Joker in each movie was a feat of its own. Audience members needed to quickly understand who the Joker was and what his plans or purpose in each movie was. We see the Joker in a room with various mob bosses as they discuss future plans for themselves and the city. Tim Burton’s “Batman” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” dominantly have the Joker speaking and his message not pleasantly being heard by the mob bosses. Although the movies are seemingly the same characters, their personalities are independent and the film has to properly convey to the audience who the Joker truly is. In the original “Batman” movie by Tim Burton, the scene starts with a zoom out of one mob boss sitting at the end of a conference table until more mob bosses are seen. It is clear that someone is speaking, but before the audience can start giving it their attention, introductory of everybody else in the room was needed. With everybody sitting neatly at the table, it is clear that this room is a typical meeting location for ‘business’ discussion. As the camera continues to zoom out, symmetry from men at both sides of the table becomes visible which seemingly points focus to the original man sitting at the end of the table, who is perfectly illuminated. This is done to show that this man is of importance. The joker is then seen for the first time sitting comfortable at the opposite end of the table not in his typical ‘joker’ makeup. Here the Joker is revealed to be a temporary president trying to change the way the mobsters do their business. This quickly changes when he turns his respectful handshake goodbye into a brutal murder of the original man via electric shock. In the beginning of this scene,
