They seem lonely at times, and a trip to the local grocery store seems to help brighten their day. Their conversations can be short and long it just depends each time. Most short stories begin with a recipe or a question for someone else’s ideas. Long stories can go into what is happing in their life, how their children are, or about a trip they took. It is nice to see a storyteller shopper because they change the pace of the every day grind by taking the time to talk to everyone.
Throughout John Updike`s short story "A & P" the protagonist Sammy, a young 19 year old male, is constantly judging the cliental who walks into the grocery store, A& P. For example, when three girls walk into the store with nothing but their bathing suits; Sammy’s mind begins to be very active when he is judging the girls. As Sammy watched Quennie “buzz” over to her friends, it made his stomach (and who knows what else) rubs the inside of his apron (Updike 2). Sammy also observed the women in the store turn away when they noticed the girls almost as if they knew what would happen and were ashamed for young girls (Updike 2). At which point, Sammy views all the older, less attractive shoppers as “sheep” pushing their carts around in a herd, or as “house slaves in pin curlers” (Updike 2). Through the choice of words by the author in these references from the book, the reader is led to believe that women were generally portrayed as passive individuals, known to stay at home, cook for their husbands and care for the children while the men were active at work.
Name Changed Life In the “A&P” 19 year old Sammy who is a story all by himself is changed by three girls who enter his life as they walk in to shop at the local “A&P”. In which later on he decides to quit his job for these girls as a cashier at the local grocery store called the “A&P.” Realizing that he has made the decision to quit not only for himself, but the girls who inspired him not literally but figuratively quit to make what he seemed the right choice. In this short story, Sammy seems to have mixed opinions about these three girls who walk in. He sizes them up almost as they were all close friends and have known each other for years. Throughout the story, Sammy seems to become attached to these girls.
Viewers are then allowed into J.D.’s thoughts where he resultantly says, “...maybe it was the free muffins for life but Doctor Kelso still hangs out here every day.” From J.D.’s deliverance of this line, the audience sees J.D.’s comically sarcastic nature. In fact, his intrapersonal narration that is used frequently throughout the show gives the comic relief that defines the show. Also, because the Intrapersonal technique is utilized in this specific situation along with others, viewers are exposed to intimate thoughts that in any other circumstance would not be revealed. Before Kelso is confronted by Ted, he enters the shop going about his daily routine. From his light hearted
He goes on to describe them, which is the content of the majority of the story, by saying one is chubby with a berry face, one was tall, and the other was not tall but she was the queen. How could Sammy just assume she is the queen of the group? It is only through his judgment that he declares this certain girl the queen and even names her Queenie. I see Sammy as judging these girls as many others would just as they were violating a norm still did not commit any crime but Lengel’s reaction is more shocking. Lengel is the store manager and he is determined to let the girls know they are in the wrong for not dressing decently.
The reader’s familiarity with grocery stores makes it instantly easier to visualize the setting than if Updike had attempted to set the same story in a random office building. Updike uses familiarity to his advantage. Since most readers likely have an existing knowledge of grocery stores and can visualize a typical layout, Updike begins to describe the activities happening in the store rather than describing the store itself. The reader can tell the setting is a grocery store just after reading Sammy is “in the third check-out slot, with [his] back to the door, so [he] doesn’t see them until they’re over by the bread” (Updike 17). By not having to take the time to describe to the reader the general setting Updike is able to give in-depth details about the food on the shelves, the color of the floor, the people walking the isles, and the employees behind the registers and counters.
Eddie Carbone and his wife Beatrice have brought up Eddie’ s niece Catherine like their own daughter. Eddie is a kind but strict guardian. He loves his niece but wants to be in control. In the first scene, he tells her that her new clothes are too sexy, then that she can’t take the job she wants. He tells her that she is acting in a way he doesn't approve of, he says that she is ‘walkin’ wavy’ and that this is making men notice her and ‘their heads are turning like windmills’.
Girls see guys go for the girls that dress scantily clad, the ones that would rather wake up 2 hours earlier just to cake their faces on, the ones that rather go to a school that has hotter guys than a better education, the ones that flirt with all the boys, the girls that think about themselves and have no regards for others, we see it, we good girls see it all. We good girls are usually deemed the ugly friend, the backup, the one the guys would make their wives, but not their girlfriend at the moment. We are the ones that fall for the good boys, but the boys are blinded by the "beauty" of the bad girls. They get caught up in those girls, and what does that leave us good girls to do? Wait.
My First Job Waiting for clients to choose their lunch, work at the bakery was my first job. First I had never worked in a bakery before, so I had to learn what the bakery had to serve and learn my position, which was making their food choices. My job at the bakery was to make people lunch and serve them or wrap to take out. I had to make pizza, pastas, serve soup and also make subs; at the bakery. The first week I was very nervous, so I made several mistakes.
