“Hero: a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities; one considered a model or ideal.” This statement is the definition of a hero. A hero can be any person that shows traits such as courage, bravery, selflessness, determination, and will-power. Heroes are people that others look to in time of need and are usually idolized. I believe that the main character in the play The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller can be considered a hero. The protagonist, John Proctor, was a defiant, yet well respected farmer in Salem, Massachusetts. He showed heroic characteristics through intricate situations of theocratic injustice. As the witch trials of the Salem village unfolded, John Proctor found himself in a difficult situation in which his actions not only decided his fate, but the fate of many innocent people. John Proctor was married to Elizabeth Proctor and they had three sons. He was a farmer who was well known in the village for being a good man. Proctor was a well known, good man in the village of Salem. He was a land owner and a prosperous farmer; however he did have a tragic flaw which was that he could not control his emotions. He got angry very easily and described himself as a sinner because he cheated on his wife with Abigail. When the witch trials began, they caused a huge struggle for John. His wife, friends, and innocent people were being accused for crimes they did not commit. He made heroic and difficult decisions in order to help the issue as much as he could. When he had to choose between confessing and hanging, he had an epiphany. He realized that John Proctor was not a bad man, but a good man that had sinned. When John understands what the source of his downfall was, he had the strength to stand up to the unmoral society and die in defense of the
