Jimmy Carter-the Virtues of Aging

Reflective Paper-Carter President Jimmy Carter’s statement “We are not alone in our worry about both the physical aspects of aging and the prejudice that exists toward the elderly, which is similar to racism or sexism. What makes it different is that the prejudice also exists among those of us who are either within this group or rapidly approaching it” in his book “The Virtues of Aging”. This is a telling revelation of how not only the general public views our older generation, but also how the older generation view themselves. Whereas, the older generation was once looked upon with respect, they are now ignored. Many people, including the older generation, feel that the older generation is a burden on society. Contributing factors could be advanced age, poor health, financial position, or even the fact that their own family members have pushed them out of their lives leaving them feeling they are a hardship or encumbrance to society. I agree with President Carter that this prejudice that society and the older generation have of themselves is similar to that of racism and sexism. For too long, society has labeled the older generation as a burden to society. I have been guilty of it myself. Fortunately there are those of the older generation such as President Carter and his wife Rosalynn, to breakdown the stereotypes that have been prevalent regarding the older population. I agree with President Carter’s challenges and blessing of growing old. As people grow older, it is only natural that their body will begin to deteriorate. It is up to each individual as to how much deterioration will occur. One must maintain a healthy and active lifestyle in order to slow down or ward off the aging process. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, reading, working crossword puzzles, etc. are vital in keeping both the body and mind healthy. I so look forward to the days
