Jean Piaget argued that when children of a certain age watch water being poured from a short, wide container into a tall, thin container, they think that the amount of water has changed. Discuss with reference to research evidence. In every area of psychology there are numerous different perspectives each giving their own viewpoint on the subject matter. The area of child development is no different. Over the years many different theorists have done vast amounts of research on children in an attempt to discover things such as how they develop or what influences their development. The debate over nature and nurture is one that is still going strong today. This essay will consider one of the main areas of child development, constructivism. It will look at the main concepts of the theory as well the criticisms it has received. In the area of child development psychology Swiss born Jean Piaget (1896-1980) is the lead name in the constructivism theory. Piaget originally started his life as a biologist. His interest in how organisms develop and adapt to their environment lead to his interest in child development. Piaget described his studies as genetic epistemology; he was interested in the development of knowledge and saw it as an adaptation to the environment, Oates, Sheehy and Wood, (2005,p63). It was Piaget’s opinion that children have to construct their own understanding of the world. He believed that humans are not able to use and understand information that they are given straight away. Instead they have to construct their own knowledge through their own experiences. Children construct their own personal mental representations from their own experiences that they then build upon throughout their life. These mental representations are known as schemas. As children grow and develop they are constantly adding more information to the schemas via the world
