WORD COUNT: 1,441 Case Study: Genres in the Vehicle Strand of Media Media was a sense first found in 1605 (Harper, D 2010) and is defined as “the means of communication that reach larger numbers of people, such as television, newspapers and radio” (Collins Dictionary, 2009). The varying sources of media are relied upon everyday by the general public as a source for gaining information whether it be factual or fiction and the media sector is therefore very lucrative and profitable. The recent increase in social networking websites has provided a new gateway for media, with popular sites such as ‘Facebook’ gaining $700 million in 2009 (Eldon, E 2010). However, the film industry, which has been operating since the early 1900’s, is the topic which will be approached in this essay and its accordance with the vehicle strand. The vehicle strand “relates to the carriers or vehicles of communication” (Valdivia, A 2003) to which films is one of them. This essay will analyse the theory of genre within the vehicle strand and applying it to the critically acclaimed 1975 film ‘Jaws’ by Steven Spielberg. Genre is defined as “a French word for type or Kind” (Branston G et al, 2010). The word ‘genre’ can be applied to hundreds of examples in everyday life, but it is specifically linked within the world of media (i.e. genre of music, genre of film etc.) There are different interpretations of genre and some key characteristics of some types of genre’s are often mixed with others, causing confusion amongst them.
