This would also affect the decisions an individual makes regarding product selection. A commercial that is attractive to an American housewife may not be attractive to a Japanese housewife. A few of the differences in American and Japanese culture are importance of hierarchy, group harmony, using certain numbers in advertising and language barriers. Cross Cultural Issues Hierarchy is highly respected in Japan personally and professionally, yet in America hierarchy exists but is not held to as high of standards or tradition. This is so engrained in the Japanese Culture that children even refer to their senior and junior classmates with specific names.
I've been to Beijing, Seoul, Shanghai, Bangkok, Taipei, Singapore and Hong Kong. I've enjoyed aspects of all of them, but I don't consider any of these places even half as interesting or livable as Tokyo. Jobs are fairly hard to find in Tokyo, if I have a degree, I might find work as an English teacher. But these jobs are harder to get as more qualified people are trying out for them. It will depend on how well educated I am.
The Japanese at Manzanar re-made aspects of American life that they liked best such as: high school yearbooks, football teams, clubs, and even dance bands. For those who were born in America or who came over long ago from Japan, America was their fresh culture. Oddly, the all- Japanese Manzanar was where the Japanese could enjoy the pleasures of American culture most. Outside of Manzanar the Japanese people’s enjoyment of American culture was ruined. David Hardie Bleck English 101 November 2, 2011 Title In the history of the world, language is one of the most influential aspects of culture. How a society treats and embellishes language shows much about how they think about themselves, about others, and how the hierarchy of their society is constructed. The way people treat language itself says much about the place it has in human society. For example, In Jared Diamond's book Guns Germs and Steel: The Fate of Human Societies, he says of the Japanese mindset that "...Japan continues to use its horrendously cumbersome kanji writing system in preference to efficient alphabets or Japan's own efficient kana syllabary -- because the prestige attached to kanji is so great." Also, when regarding a historical event, the film production is irresponsible for educational function as they use dramatic license all the time. Even though the film had been blamed for numerous historical inaccuracies, it still succeeded and “[became] the number-one film worldwide for the calendar year 2001,” including Japan (“Pearl Harbor”). They needed the support of the manufacturing company to have the town survive. Our Government needs to be more involved with helping the American businesses by using trade agreements and import quotas similar to the ones that Ronald Regan imposed. Regan imposed temporary quotas on some Japanese goods, trying to give American manufactures the time to compete with the reliability and efficiency of the cars arriving from Japan. However, the plan did not work as Regan had hoped it would. The Japanese opened factories in the United States.
America was always known as a rather isolated nation, but commercial interests in Latin America and East Asia, along with fulfilling “God’s will” of Americanizing the world to create peace and a better world, altered the United States’ foreign policy. These changes had an impact on society to where Americans discriminated against the waves of Japanese immigrants enough that the Gentlemen’s Agreement was implemented to reduce immigration to the U.S. and reduce discrimination against the Japanese-Americans. Also, the increased involvement in the world established the United States as a world power which gave society a reason to have high hopes for the future and attempt to make the world a better and more peaceful place. -------------------------------------------- [ 1 ]. This surfer beach town is flooded with Israelis and as a result there is an Israeli restaurant on every corner with fantastic fares like schnitzel, hummus and falafel. Costa Rica also has a large Chinese population, which is reflective in the various Chinese restaurants in any given town. In places like Playa Samara, there are surprising populations of relocated Italians that own restaurants serving up exquisite Italian food. Who would have thought that you would have been able to find pizza on par with on youd find in Italy in this small pocket of the
Diversity In The Workplace Freedom Riders “There is Strength in Numbers” September 20, 2012 “There is strength in numbers”. After watching such a powerful movie like The Freedom Riders, it allowed me to think about the world from a different perspective. Having been born in 1990 and not during the civil rights movement time period, it made me feel blessed but it also made me think about the disturbing issues that are currently happening today that I feel sheltered from. I believe that not only myself, but also most others my age may feel the same way about feeling sheltered from certain issues that are current in this world. Never hearing about the Freedom Riders before this past week, made me recognize how much I am unaware of in this
