“Compare and Contrast Essay” “The hearts of small children are delicate organs. A cruel beginning in this world can twist them into curios shapes,” a quote by Carson Smith McCullers. This quote explains the lives of both R.B. Mitchell and Jane Eyre. R.B. Mitchell grew up in the 20th Century, Middle America, in a children’s home; however, he is now wealthy and successful for writing an autobiography called Castaway Kid. Jane Eyre is a story written by Charlotte Brontë. Jane Eyre is a girl who grew up in the 19th Century with her aunt and was eventually put into an orphanage, but later grew up to fall in love with a wealthy man who she eventually married. There are many similarities between R.B. Mitchell and Jane Eyre; such as how both of their lives were a bildungsroman, also how both motherly figures treated them in their lives. There are many similarities between R.B. Mitchell and Jane Eyre; however, there are also many differences. Some of these differences include how each of them gained their wealth, and how they viewed life in the orphanage. R.B. Mitchell and Jane Eyre have many similarities throughout their lives. One of these similarities is how both of their lives were a bildungsroman. R.B. Mitchell grew up in a children’s home, watched over by Swedish Christians. His mother left him there when he was only three years old, because she was too irresponsible to take care of him because of her addiction to alcohol and drugs. His father was in a mental hospital because he tried to commit suicide by blowing his brains out with a gun. R.B. Mitchell was in the children’s home until the age of 18; when he turned 18 the home kicked him out. He decided to go to college so he wouldn’t end up on the streets the rest of his life. At college he met Susan who would eventually become his wife. Once he got out of college he later decided to write a book about his life
