What’s the Buzz on Smart Grids? Answer to question 1: 1) Smart grid differs from the current infrastructure in Canada in several ways. Firstly, the current electricity infrastructure in Canada is outdated. The energy companies such as Hydro One are facing problems due to the consumption of energy by their consumers. They are unable to determine the consumption of electricity by an average consumer based on what is being supplied to their consumers by them. The companies require consumption to distribution ratio information in order to develop a more efficient approach for electricity distribution. Furthermore, a customer may be consuming more electricity than required without knowing which could lead into high costs and less reliability. The customers are not able to get help from their provider if they are having problems with their electricity. The technology used for the Smart grids is more advanced compared to Canada’s current electricity infrastructure. The smart grid transfers power using digital technology to save cost and increase reliability and transparency. It is designed to provide electricity reading based on each household use. The main purpose of a Smart Grid system is to be eco-friendly and also help in reducing the pollution. Another Key feature that the smart grid has is the ability to detect the source of a power outage, at the individual household level quickly. With such information, electricity companies can respond more rapidly and efficiently to service issues. The current electricity infrastructure does not contain features such as collecting detailed data which increases cost, whereas the Smart grid system has several features that allow electricity providers to focus on enhancing their customer service support and reliability.
