Kaplan University IT331: Technology Infrastructure Assignment 2 1 1. Describe at least three different networks (computer or data communications) which you access or interact with on an average day. The first network that use on a daily basis is my cell phone network. Every time I make a phone call I’m using a network. If I want view the internet I can use my phone because of the bandwidth offered by my carrier. The second network is my office network. Every time I turn my computer on at work I have to log in and I’m not just logging onto my computer but I’m also logging into my office network. This allows me to communicate using outlook and MS communicator to instant message with my coworkers. The last network I use on a daily basis is my home network. Now that’s interesting because my computers are on their own network and then there is my cable and telephone all also using that same connection in order to work. 2. Binary data codes like EBCDIC, ASCII, or Unicode are often presented using hexadecimal notation rather than a long list of 0’s and 1’s. Likewise other items requiring long sequences of 0’s and 1’s like IP addresses to identify network location are generally presented in non-binary formats as well. Describe the relationship between a hexadecimal character and its associated binary. Describe the relationship between one octet of an IP address and its associated binary. Explain why these notations are often utilized rather than the full binary. So the relationship between hexadecimal and binary is basically that each hexadecimal digit represents four binary digits and the main use of hexadecimal conversion is a human friendly representation of binary coded values in computing and digital electronics. An IP address consists of four so-called octets separated by dots. The octet is a binary number of eight digits, which equals the decimal
