Islam in the Eyes of Pi In the book Life of Pi, Yann Martel portrays a young boy loving God in the most unorthodox situations such as practicing three contrary religions equally and faithfully. When Pi is confronted by the pandit, imam, and priest at the same time and questioned to choose only one religion, Pi replies, “Bapu Gandhi said, ‘All religions are true.’ I just want to love God,” (Martel 87). Pi chooses to continue on the path of practising Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity, but his time he tries to stay to himself and not linger about (90). Islam is a religion that Pi finds to be “a beautiful religion of brotherhood and devotion” (77). To Pi, the three religions he practices are the same in some ways (63), but there are some practices unique to every religion. In Islam, there are some key beliefs and important rituals needed to fully practice the religion properly. Islam is the acceptance and obedience of the teachings of God which were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad P.B.U.H. There are six main Islamic beliefs. The first one as stated by Ibrahim is the belief in “one, unique, incomparable God” (45). The belief in angels is the belief that these honoured creatures worship God alone, obey Him, and act only by His command (47). The belief in God’s revealed books is the belief that God revealed books to His messengers as proof and guidance for them. Belief in the prophets and messengers of God means believing in all the prophets and messengers of God and that Prophet Muhammad P.B.U.H is the last messenger of God. Belief in the Day of Judgement is the belief that all people will be resurrected for God’s judgement according to their beliefs and deeds. Finally, the belief in Al-Qadar or Divine Predestination is the belief that God knows everything, God has recorded everything that has and will happen, everything happens because of God’s will, and God is
