Islam is the world’s second most practiced religion, directly following Christianity. Islam is a monotheistic, Abrahamic religion which follows the Qur’an. The Qur’an is the central Islamic sacred text, and it is believed to be the words of the Islamic almighty god, Allah, spoken through the prophet Muhammad. In the Qur’an, there are several verses which contain the subject of violence towards those who are not Muslim, referring to them as ‘infidels’. Sura 4:101 of the Qur’an reads, “The infidels are your sworn enemies,” and Sura 66:9 reads, “Prophet, make war on the infidels.” These excerpts from the Qur’an have been used as justification for Islamic terrorism, where the readings are violently interpreted and cause conflict with regions of the world where Islam is not dominant. Are the Words of the Qur’an Literal? According to Steven A. Richards (1999), the Qur’an did not exist in written book form at the time of Muhammad’s death in 632CE. It was not until 650CE when the words from Muhammad were written down to become what is known as the Qur’an. With that being said, there is controversy if the words written in 650CE were even the actual words said by Muhammad during his life and time as a prophet to Allah. These words have been taken by Islamic extremists violently interpreted, and as a final result become the justification for Islamic extremist attacks. These groups will later claim to be ‘carrying out the will of Allah’. The morning of 9/11, hours after the attacks themselves, the Bush administration had turned towards the terrorist group
