Tayba Bashir 12LJB Hwk 07/10/13 What do we learn about Isabelle and Azaire's relationship in the early stages of the book ? The novel Birdsong is firstly set in Amiens 1910. When Azaire's house is described the description suggests a cold, distant house and gives a sense of mystery, confusion and ambiguity. The evidence to make the readers think this is when it says about the house having 'a strong, formal front towards the road from behind iron railings'. The house has got physical surroundings which are hard and can relate to the characters harshness and coldness. In my opinion he is not showing any emotions towards her but it all seems calm however is not what it seems. When Stephen hears Isabelle and Azaire, Isabelle is pleading towards him showing she has no impact over him and he can do whatever he likes as when he was beating her up. 'It turned into a gasp which, because of its sudden move into a higher register, was clearly one of pain.' Stephen can tell an unease between their relationship and knows something is not right about their relationship therefore questions Isabelle about it after he has heard what just happened. She is desperate and you can tell she is very upset. This implies that she is not living her life and has sacrificed her life for Azaire. She seems to always be miserable and is not happy inside. She is only turns alive when she and Stephen start having feelings for each other and feels special inside. This whole relationship towards Isabelle and Azaire seems to be a relationship where Azaire has all the power to do what he likes and Isabelle is not treated as a human being and obeys Azaire. You can tell Isabelle feels she can do nothing about it and has no power of what is happening to her. She feels worthless and she has become used to feeling like that with Azaire always hurting her and she is blamed by
