Video gaming has always been frowned upon by some people especially by parents of young children. The rising popularity of video games has instigated a wide range of concerns from those who believe that playing games can corrupt the minds of children, teens, and even adults. Possible harmful and helpful effects of video games have been a subject of debate among parents, researchers, gamers, and video game producers. The arguments were mostly about the games’ potential good and bad influence concerning children and adolescents. Based on recent research findings by scientists and psychologists, 90% of American youth play video games in a daily basis. It is an extremely popular pastime among children and teens, though most parents see it as a time-waster and a negative influence. However, most people are not aware of the positive effects video games can bring. Despite some negatives, video gaming can be a beneficial influence because it can enhance mentality, develop morale, and is good for the health. Enhance Mentality Playing video games gives the brain a real workout. It can help improve and enhance a broad range of mental skills. Video games are remarkably effective teachers and can make learning fun. It provides players with challenging tasks that involve complex and high level thinking. Quick Thinking and Problem Solving Most video games require quick thinking and making fast analysis and decisions. Players do all of these almost every second of the game, which gives the brain a real workout. According to researchers at the University of Rochester, “games simulating stressful events such as those found in battle or action games could be a training tool for real-world situations”
