Bias is an opinion about whether a person, group, etc, it`s always subjective. The situation we have today with mass media is that all the news are biased instead of being objective. Media bias is the bias of journalists and news producers within the mass media in the selection of events and stories that are reported and how they are covered. The oldest bias in news is political bias. Political bias has been a feature of the mass media since its birth following the invention of the printing press.
This legislation was introduced in a rapid fashion following the attack of 9/11. Because of this, it had some points of vagueness and left it open for misinterpretation. Organizations like the ACLU fed on this and released multiple reports demeaning the substance of the Act. In doing this, it introduced fear to the public that their civil liberties were being greatly compromised. In reality, the majority of the legislation is directed towards people suspected of terrorism.
Pros and Cons of Media Censorship Media is a mirror of the world because it reflects the various happenings in different parts of the world. The media covers a very broad spectrum of news to cater to individual needs and tastes. Thus, the government assumes that the public has access to a wide range of news and views. Therefore, media censorship is created gradually by democratic and non-democratic systems as an invisible boundary of freedom in speech and expression. However, media censorship may be the only true way to protect our thoughts and mannerism.
Down with the Patriot Act The Patriot Act is a very controversial law. It allows the government much more room to do as they please. Some of these practices that government officials can do are monitoring phone calls, emails, and going through personal records. They say this will help prevent terrorism, but is losing one’s privacy really worth it? Could there be a better way to prevent terrorism?
The Tampering of Freedom of Speech In the Media Gilbert Anthony Martinez Charlotte Samuels Political Science 100 November 12, 2011 In this day and age of modern society dealing with an information based civilization, some people and agencies have a hard time with handling new and expressive forms of art and technological materials and due to this, our first amendment rights of freedom of speech are being violated unknowingly to many. We as a people are heavily influenced by the media and multimedia entities such as television, music, film/cinema, video games, the press, and of course the internet which is the fastest tool used in spreading information worldwide. With the extreme advances in technology and complexity, the world is now being exposed to new and astonishing mediums of art, expression, popular culture, and informative material that seem to anger the government, which in turn, policies supporting censorship are enforced or trying to become enforced. With the ever expanding process of technology innovation, these multimedia sources have gained more and more attention and are becoming increasingly more common. In terms of the general public, the media is most commonly understood or perceived as merely a means of entertainment.
Censoring needless material becomes an important decision for the government. In such cases media is the important target, since people learn and exhibit from media. Media plays an important role in influencing in both good and bad materials. It certainly depends on whether or not a person chooses to watch it. Even though there are advisories and warning before shows sometimes it has to do with addictiveness.
The relationship then between the media and politicians according to Daniel Chandler, ‘The media and politicians have a love/hate relationship’. This is due to the fact that the politicians require the media to spread the word about their work. However this is also a relationship where the media requires politicians to satisfy the audiences’ interests of political issues ranging from results of general elections to every day political opinions regarding current events such as the terrorist attacks in Pakistan recently. There is also a belief within the political camp that the way the media portrays events is to their own beliefs. This is especially seen with newspapers.
Studying the relationship or influence that media, in all its forms has on its viewers or audience has always been controversial. The debate on whether the media, in this case television, just portray what the society is, like a reflection of the society or does the society mirror what the media projects still hasn’t culminated into much with most even now, taking contradictory stands. Does the media merely show the violence that the society constitutes of? Innumerable studies have been conducted to understand the same, one of the most famous of which was the Payne Studies in the year 1920, looking at the impact of violence on children. By the 1960s, the studies started focusing on understanding the increase in the prevalence of violence in
Interactivity has increased a lot with the evolution of sites such as twitter which can let the audience join in global chats through hashtags. This can often lead to the media seeing what is relevant in the lives of the public, and may even dictate what news stories make headlines etc. “Censorship is necessary.” Evaluate the claims for and against this argument. (24 Marks) The mass media is one of the crucial agents of socialisation in modern societies and is becoming an ever more present part of our lives. Many people argue that censorship within the media is necessary to protect vulnerable people or sensitive information.
“Conservative and popular press especially indulges in sometimes blatant ‘foreigner bashing’ and reproduction and affirmation of racial prejudice” (Van Dijk, 1999). There are individuals out there who use social media to their advantage by spreading their biased ethnic discriminatory beliefs. The individuals who usually have this power are the social elites and political leaders. Social media has been a community with an aim to communicate with others but to promote and influence ideas to the audience (Umi Digital, 2013). Ethnicity discrimination continues to spread in different conventions and an aim to end this is
