Everywhere you look you see children texting on their cell phones. Abbreviations and shorthand language are the ways the vast majority of teenagers communicate with family and friends. There are some who would say texting leads to a decline in language and grammar skills. Others believe texting can improve a child’s grammar, reading, and writing skills. Texting hinders students from learning proper writing skills, communication/ social skills and literacy.
The bad thing about that is the fact that if teens and preteens start handling cell phones, which they already do, they begin to text more often. This starts another problem. We send our children to school to be able to teach them how to read, write, spell and think. School is basically another way of saying we are sending our children off to a building with adults who can teach them how to think in an advanced, more complex way. They learn and memorize methods and build their way of thinking; however, texting interrupts the simple aspects of learning how to spell.
Texting has become a normal activity in the lives of many and because of this fact; many new issues have been brought to light. Texting in relation to children can be seen as a controversial issue due to the fact that there are many studies which show that children and the use of texting may reflect a negative correlation. Researching the topic in greater depth reveals that children texting during certain times of the day may produce cognitive learning problems, children and the growing rate of texting may also lead to literacy problems and texting use by children may also be in direct relation to social problems such as: the new trend of “sexting,” a lack in actual person-to-person communication skills, and a growing reclusion from the actual world and
The problem arises that cell phones interfere with a teenager’s ability to execute an effective and accurate face-to-face social and written communication in an educational environment. Young people have become so much more comfortable with text messaging that many times, they would rather text someone than talk to them face to face, even when they are in the same room, the same car or the same cafeteria table during lunchtime. Social networking has created a serious breach in the ability of young people to communicate and interact with each other face to face. Most students are not even aware of their surroundings because they are busy texting. For example, Students who are sitting in the same cafeteria during lunch would text each other from one table to another.
SMS users learn that the ways in which they text takes on particular social meanings, signifying different aspects about their individuality... The writing/texting process itself is considered creative, as it is most definitely not a simple or basic concept when it comes to selecting the right characters to express yourself, especially within the short word limit given. After analyzing data and text transcripts, it has become evident that the majority of teenage texters use phonetic spelling on a day to day basis to represent themselves and their personality within a virtual environment. Teens feel as though using simple or standard English words is ‘dull’ and ‘boring’, so by adapting words to fit their own liking and individuality, they are creatively embodying
This essay will critically respond to her arguments. Two of the arguments that Wanda Williams gives are that people are writing less meaningfully and academically; and young peoples' verbal, social skills and ability to read and absorb a long, complicated text are harmed. Williams explains that in the past, people would spend hours, even days on writing letters, full of meaningful discourse and communication, but now young people do not think about what they are writing, they simply exchange meaningless sentences and their ability to write academically is suffering. The author also states that the young generation finds it more difficult to understand and process a complex text; and they become unable to deal with simple social interactions necessary to advance their careers. First, the writer fails to convince the reader that people are using less meaningful and academic writing because of using email or social networks.
How often do you use your cell phone, I always use my phone and see others using theres whether they are driving, walking down the street, or even in class. Cell phones have become a part of our everyday lives. However it is always a controversy in the classroom between teachers and students whether cell phone usage should be allowed in school. Students like me enjoy texting during their classes, but most teachers oppose having cell phones in class. I personally am one of the students who you could say has a “cell phone addiction” I am the one teachers catch texting from the corner of their eye as my fingers move quickly across the screen of my Iphone during class.
Leeban Ali March 28, 2012 As a student who attends high school I believe that cell phones should not be allowed during school hours! Also most of the students have it out and texting during class. Cell phones are becoming more and more of a disruption to the learning progress of students. This will have major affect on them in the long run because when it comes to tests and exams they won’t know what to do. People say that students can use their phones for emergencies at school but they can just make a phone call in the office.

Change is something many people fear, so technology, an ever changing part of our society, is often times looked upon with reserve. Some of the most popular pieces of technology in the world today are cell phones, and with their rising popularity comes much controversy. Cell phones are an extremely useful item to have at all times throughout the day whether it be for emergency reasons, all of the useful things a cell phone contains, or learning new things about technology to use later in life. Although allowing students to have cell phones in class can be a distraction, there are a lot of reasons of why they should be allowed. One very important example is if there is ever an emergency in your family or your classroom you can easily call whoever you need to. If something happened in class you could call 911 and may prevent further disaster.
