Almost everyone has an opinion on, “What makes a good parent?” I think a good parent should be patient, loving and kind, possess a sense of humour, and they should provide a caring and safe environment for children to grow up in. In my opinion, Prospero is a bad father as he sees Miranda as an object or an article, not has a human being. When Prospero finally agrees to let Ferdinand marry Miranda, Prospero describes her as a “gift” and says that Ferdinand has “purchased” her. These two words suggest Prospero sees Miranda more as an object, which can be bought and sold, rather than as an individual with her own views, able to make her own choices and decisions. Prospero tortures Caliban and does not see him as a person with his own free will, but more as a slave and a monster. When Caliban is out collecting firewood he tells us that Prospero puts “hedgehogs” in his “barefoot way”. This suggests that he does not care for Caliban and doesn’t see him as a child who is capable of suffering. In my opinion this makes Prospero a bad father.…show more content…
He says, “being transported away in secret studies,” (he was carried away in his magic,) “…The King of Naples being an enemy to me... hearkens my brothers suit”, (The King of Naples was on my brothers side) “…”extirpate me and mine out of the dukedom”, (they wiped out his dukedom.). This indicates Prospero does not care for anything but his magic, not even his children, because it would have been better to let his child grow up in a more natural environment.
