Is Praise Necessary in Life? A person can learn a lot about themselves from which the experiences they encounter, but to truly learn and improve from situations, it is necessary to be able to hear the truth. Being praised with everything one does, can lead to a human who thinks they are “perfect,” but to certain extent praise is a necessary part of life. Praise can be more than simply giving someone a flattery compliment that will make them feel good about themselves, praise can also be corrective criticism in a kind way that leads to improvement. As a human being I believe it is necessary to be able to handle both types of praise. Going from a basketball team that was very talented and just simply athletic for two years to being the only returning varsity player from the previous year’s team has been a struggle. Most of the girls on this year’s West Valley girls basketball team, have been praised all their lives. They have always been told after games when they played bad, “that it was okay” and “you played the best you can” when in reality, they had a crappy game and didn’t play as good as they were capable of playing. In my opinion someone should not get complete acknowledgment when they did very little correct. If each and every girl on the team could take the coaches criticism to heart without taking it personally and feeling like they have been “bashed,” we would all be able to learn from what we were being told. As a whole group there was no way for us to improve and get better because no one could handle being told the truth even if it was followed by flattering praise. We dwelled on the negativity of the words spoken to us. Criticism praise is a necessary part of life more than just in a high school sport, it carries to the real world, where when a person gets a job they need to be able to hear what they are doing wrong, so they can improve before
