Is Money the Main Motivator for People? Abstract The research paper discusses if money is the main motivation for people or not. In order to find the answer to this question, several theories of motivation are used. It is discussed if these theories suppose money to be the main motivator or not. The author believes that money is not the main motivator for people, and people are motivated by the goods and opportunities that money brings rather than by money itself. Introduction Motivation, according to the Oxford Dictionary of Psychology, is "a driving force or forces responsible for the initiation, persistence, direction, and vigour of goal-directed behavior"(Colman, 2001). Or, "motivation refers to forces that energize, direct, and sustain a person's efforts (Bateman & Snell, 1999, p.440). From the first sight, it appears like it is the money that makes people get up early and go to work every single morning. However, the situation is not that simple. One might notice that people usually see the money just as a tool, used to get something different, the final goal. Remove the goal, and the person will not be motivated by money itself. However, this kind of statement lacks some important thing. There are people who want money for the sake of money. They do not use this money, but they want it more and more. In this case, can we say that these people are motivated by money only? Actually, there are lots of theories trying to answer such kinds of questions and trying to find out what is that force that makes people stand up and start acting. In my paper, I will try to focus only on money motivation. My personal opinion that I will try to defend is that money is not the main motivator for people.
