My understanding was that we were not supposed to be mean to animals. Little did I realize back then that unethical treatment to animals was so much more than just being nice but that the zoo’s and petting farms I loved so much are
Some even see it as cruelty to animals. Who is right? Hunting is the natural way of controlling the animal population in the world. Can you imagine a world with no hunting? By keeping the numbers down, it keeps us humans safer.
Testimony: Their owners "really love these animals but they're loving them to death," says Tim Harrison, director of Outreach For Animals, a rescue operation in Dayton, Ohio. (Guarino, 2011, Oct 20) 5. Document: To meet the demands of those who keep exotic animals as pets, dealers often have to take the animals from their native lands. This disrupts the ecosystems from which they are stolen, and can disrupt the ecosystems to which they are taken if they escape
I chose this quote because it tells us that killing animals happens faster than someone gathering knowledge. Next, this book relates to society because many animals in the world are becoming endangered today. An example of this is the Bonobos from the book. Also, there are many problems in the world today just like the war in Congo. Around the world there are Army’s like the one in this book, that do not care what they are shooting at or killing, even if it is a poor animal that has done nothing wrong.
This natural urge could be taken to the extreme that one overindulges in pet ownership. This could mean owning too many pets, not properly caring for your pets or overbreeding your pets. All these overindulgences are the reasons the Humane Society of Southern Arizona exists. They are based on the idea of rehoming homeless pets, providing care for animals in need and reducing pet overpopulation. The opposite of this urge would be to not have any pets at all.
This is because they require rehabilitation and human care to help increase their chance of survival. Most rehabilitation centers claim that they capture the animal long enough to nurse it back to health and then they return them to the wild. Though this saves the lives of many marine mammals, it affects their survival instincts because they become too reliant on humans. Another reason is based on education
Make that decision based on the facts. Unfortunately, most dogs are in shelters because people did not put any thought into their new pet. Doing your research can save more than your sanity in the long run, it could save the life of a dog. Most shelters can only keep dogs for a short period of time before they are euthanized, because of the high numbers of pets in these shelters. This is just the beginning of the research you should be doing before deciding on your new pet.
But, it emphasizes the cooperation of communities as a whole to become no-kill. Yes, this is an even larger aspect to tackle than simply just turning shelters away from the “dark side,” but it actually makes full sense once the article is read. The article basically states the same things as above about how no-kill shelters tend to inadvertently dump loads of left over animals onto other shelters for them to deal with: “[C]hoosing to be limited admission by limiting the number of animals you accept, then touting yourself as "no kill" while leaving other rescues to deal with the animals you didn't accept only divides the animal welfare community...which in the end is bad for the animals.” ("KC Dog Blog,"
Shelters have limited funds and limited space, and they cannot keep all the animals they collect. The H.S.U.S. states that about half of these animals are adopted and the other half is euthanized. On the other hand, not all unwanted animals go to a shelter. What happens to a homeless animal left out on the street?
Slaughterhouses were gruesome and extremely unethical in their approach to materialize animals. It seems as if animals were no longer living beings but rather objects that humans can reproduce and manipulate. I believe that many people in our society are anthropocentric because a lot of them are not exposed to what the food industries really do. The general public is often occupied with the idea that everything should revolve around improving ourselves. But not a lot of people pay attention to what happens behind the scenes.
