October 17, 2013 Is it ADHD ? Just about every classroom in the United States has a student with ADD or ADHD (Izenberg 61). Holden Caulfield has questionable disorders, such depression, bipolar, PTSD, and more. ADHD is a disorder characterized by the symptoms of hyperactivity, inattentive, and/or impulsivity; that are more frequent and severe than is typically seen in a person. There three different types of ADHD, inattentive type, impulsive hyperactive type, and combined type that displays symptoms from all. In J.D. Salinger’s Catcher In The Rye, Holden Caulfield suffers from ADD/ADHD as shown in through the causes and symptoms of the disorder. To begin, there are no distinct causes to ADHD. Doctors and researchers are looking for causes of ADHD there is not one for it. “Doctors and researchers are not sure why certain people have ADHD, there have been theories, however, none of these theories offer a satisfactory explanation for most cases of ADHD” (Izenberg 62). Many studies suggest that genes play a large role and possible environmental factors. In addition to no causes, there are many symptoms. There are so many symptoms; some of them might bring you to believe a person has a different disorder. ADD/ADHD often has the same symptoms of other disorders, such as depression or anxiety (Morrison7). Some symptoms are, difficulty paying attention; which Holden displays in one way by getting kicked out of Pencey for that reason alone. Fidgeting and squirming, Holden horses around a lot to keep him from getting bored. Losing things, he tells you in the beginning that he misplaces all of the fencing equipment. Getting easily distracted, which is one you see a lot through the story. He says “anyways” a lot because he constantly finds himself getting off topic. People with ADHD are less able to sit still, plan ahead, organize and finish tasks, and tune in fully
