Introduction:

In most plays the protagonist is the ‘good’ character who bad things happen to them and the antagonist is the ‘bad’ character who inflicts bad things usually on the protagonist. Many readers perceive Iago to be evil and manipulative and antagonistic. In the play, Othello is viewed as the good, intelligent character and therefore many readers side with Othello as being the heroic protagonist. Othello is living a successful, newly – married life until Iago decides to intervene. However, looking at the play in a different perspective Iago can be viewed as the heroic character. Iagos desire and motive to create a better life for himself, as well as his keen and cunning intellect make him a heroic protagonist in which the audience can sympathize with.

Arguments

Lieutenancy – Iago is portrayed to be evil and self-absorbed but he has dreams and desires like anyone else – secure a better life for himself and Emilia which he would achieve with a higher rank. Iago has proven his loyalty and worth to Othello over the years and yet Othello still gives it to Cassio a ‘mathematician.’ Iago is driven by passion to fulfil his dream and will resort to stealing it from Cassio. This desire is NOT based on jealousy or selfishness but Iago wants to have the typical ‘American Dream’ – people can achieve what they desire through hard work. Iago wants to be happy = Lieutenancy.

Othello the Antagonist? - Iago is a faithful soldier to his leader Othello and deserves a promotion. Othello destroys his hopes by giving it to a less deserving man. Obvious antagonist as he seeks to destroy another mans dreams for no good reason. Up until this point Iago can be seen as a clear, prospering protagonist.

Intelligence – The plan he devises is very complicated ( I will explain plan). Although it is dangerous and risky, Iago is driven by passion to see out his well though
