Is Hamlet Insane? The topic of whether Hamlet is insane or not insane has become a very controversial dispute. Some say he Hamlet actually started to progressively become insane as the play went on (thoughts of suicide, etc.) and some say that he just put on an act to gain an opportunity to avenge his father’s death., who was murdered my Claudius, his brother. I believe that Hamlet was completely aware of the words he spoke and the actions he made and acted in a way that could be considered “insane” for vengeance. The only reason why Hamlet claimed his madness is because it allowed him to say or do whatever he felt without having people taking him seriously. “How strange or odd some’er I bear myself (As I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on). (1.5 191-193)” Hamlet used his “madness” very cunningly to avoid reprimands for the actions he had committed such as murdering Polonius. (5.2 243-246)” Here Hamlet apologized to Laertes saying that his madness was at fault for the murder of his father. A person who was insane would neither realize that he/she is mad nor would know that their actions were uncontrollable. Hamlet showed that he was sane when he was with specific characters, such as his best friend, Horatio. Hamlet completely trusted Horatio seeing as how they had been friends since childhood. Since Horatio knew of Hamlet’s act of being mad, Hamlet told him his plan of framing Claudius by using the play. “Give him heedful note, for I mine eyes will rivet his face, and, after, we will both our judgments join in censure of his seeming.
