The multi dimensional nature of an individual’s personality is beneficial towards society in certain circumstances because the individual is given the opportunity to become a tragic hero. The play Hamlet contains many situations where Hamlet, the main character displays characteristics of a tragic hero. First, tragic events experienced by Hamlet contribute to his characterization as a tragic hero. Hamlet is subject to numerous situations where he is called to act in a courageous manner. Second, failed attempts to overcome his fate show that Hamlet is a tragic hero. Hamlet does everything in his power to overcome difficult situations that threaten his societal position. Third, tragic flaws such as difficulty cooperating with other characters and position of power add to Hamlet’s characterization. Hamlet makes several mistakes in his interaction with characters in the play. Thus, Hamlet is a tragic hero, as shown through an examination of tragic events, perseverance during certain circumstances and tragic mistakes. Hamlet is characterized as a tragic hero because of the way he deals with difficult circumstances (tragic events). Hamlet faces an interpersonal conflict. He shows three traits that reflect his assessment of self in Act 2, scene 2 of the play. “I will tell you why; so shall my anticipation prevent your discovery and your secrecy to the king and queen moult no feather. Have of late – but wherefore I know not – lost all my mirth, forgone all custom of exercises; and indeed it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly frame, the earth, seems to me a sterile promontory, this most excellent canopy, the air look you, this brave o’er hanging firament..” (Act 2, Scene 2, Lines 295 – 313).
