Hannah McGowen April 19, 2012 English 10H B-2 Dolphin Killings Looking at a small fishing town in Japan called Taiji, it seems as if it came right out of a story book. Three hundred miles from Tokyo on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, it harbors not only fish, but a big secret. Every year, in this small village, over two thousand dolphins are slaughtered. It was a secret the Japanese have kept for four hundred years, until now. Though the Japanese think the dolphin killings are fine, many others do not.
“Whale Wars” is a show about a conservation society who protects whales in the southern ocean from the Japanese Whaling Fleet who hunts whales to sell the meat illegally on the Japanese Market. The Fin Whale is located worldwide from the North Pacific to the Southern Pacific to the Indian, Mediterranean and the Arctic Oceans as well as the Southern Antarctic (WWF, 2007). The Pelagic Zone is where the Fin Whale lives and is a coastal species sometimes living in shallow waters(WWF, 2007). It feeds through the baleen plates in taking large amounts water filtering it through its mouth to in take fish, krill and squid(Harrison, 2005). When it feeds on schools of fish it often lunges sideways in taking the school within several lunges.
In 1981 my family attempted to escape from Vietnam. It has been estimated that over half the persons who tried to escape Vietnam by boat died at sea, more than a million persons. But even though it was dangerous we were willing to risk our life because the communist hated my family so bad that we could not survive in Vietnam. There were nine persons in my immediate family when we tried to escape by boat from Thuan An Beach in Hue. My Father, my mother, me, and four brothers, and two sisters tried to escape from Vietnam.
* You can save sick animals, * See coral reefs * Examine habitats * You get to meet new people * New experiences * Discover new things CONS: * There aren't many colleges that have this major, so you will have to go to a state that does. * Oceans are now both
Also, some regional libraries will have the specific information you are looking for compared to the other ones. As stated before, online research databases will provide you information that might not be available in the bookshelf at one of the Ohio State libraries. Online databases aren’t only limited to books and articles, they also have peer reviewed journals, Google Scholar, and many other research databases to search from. Finally, a new tool that is a great resource is OhioLINK. Ohio State University Libraries participate with a large group of other college libraries and the State Library of Ohio provide researchers like Casey the information he
Carr states, “For me, as for others, the Net is becoming a universal medium, the conduit for most of the information that flows through my eyes and ears and into my mind,” (Carr, 59). Ever since the Net has been created, it has become more and more powerful and popular with time. I do not necessarily feel that “Google is Making Us Stupid,” but believe that it is changing the way we think and how we go about retrieving information. Search engines such as Google can be very efficient and concise, but this is not always a good thing. Using the internet has changed the way many people read.
Is Human Right In Keeping Killer Whales In Prison? In recent years, people start to care about the environment and animals. A lot of laws and actions are applied to improve the habitat which they destroyed so much before and protect the other species all around the world. In some countries, the captive situation of killer whales – the large marine mammal – is one of the most important problems. From the second half of 20th century, theme parks caught orcas from the ocean and keep them to organize entertain shows.
Dolphins often work as a team to harvest fish schools, but they also hunt individually. Dolphins search for prey primarily using echolocation, which is similar to sonar. They emit clicking sounds and listen for the return echos to determine the location and shape of nearby items, including potential prey. Bottlenose dolphins also use sound for communication, including squeaks and whistles emitted from the blowhole and sounds emitted through body language, such as leaping from the water and slapping their tails on the water surface. Numerous investigations of bottlenose dolphin intelligence have been conducted, examining mimicry, use of artificial language, object
Whaling has been around on since prehistoric times, they were hunted by chasing the whales, and throwing a harpoon into them. Whaling and fishing in the late nineteenth and twentieth century became a tragedy of the commons where fishermen had little incentive to allow some fish to remain to only be taken by others. Countries around the world were putting whales on the brink of extinction through any means necessary. By not taking young fish, this would allow future fish to keep the population stable, but by not taking the younger fish, the fishermen would lose these to other fishermen. In the 1800s and 1900s whales were found to be quite practical and useful.
SeaWorld animal trainers began working with bottlenose dolphins in 1963 before the first park opened. Requirements Each year, hundreds of men and women apply for positions in SeaWorld's and Busch Gardens' Animal Training departments. The number of openings is generally limited to fewer than 10 hires per park each year. For SeaWorld, a college degree is not required to be eligible for an animal training position, but it is preferred. Applicants are expected to complete some college coursework in biology, marine biology, zoology, and animal behavior or psychology.
