In a recent survey (The Daily Telegraph 26.6.2000), it is found that there is a trend to either reduce or give up meat entirely. On the one hand, many people are advised to eat less fat, more fibre, more fresh fruit and vegetables since it is believed that vegetarian diet is a more healthy diet. A vegetarian diet can prevent people from getting cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and other common health problems. And for the economic side, vegetable food is much cheaper than animal food. On the other hand, it is argued that a vegetarian diet is bad to our bodies since it does not produce enough proteins as eating meat. Also, most nutrition experts recommend a balanced diet containing elements of all foods. First of all, on the one hand, many people are advised to eat less fat, more fibre, more fresh fruit and vegetables since it is believed that vegetarian diet is a more healthy diet. A vegetarian diet can prevent people from getting cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and other common health problems by 40% because vegetable provides more vitamins, dietary fibre which is good for our health. Vegetable also provides less cholesterol then meats. Getting too much cholesterol is harmful to our heart. Furthermore, considering the economic and agriculture side, vegetable food is much cheaper than animal food. The food that used to feed cattle could be better served feeding people directly. Sometimes, in other areas animals bred for their meat are fed perfectly good plant food that is fit for human consumption. So it is uneconomical for us to eat meat. Also, feeding cattle takes up land that could be used for crops. This in turn puts pressure on us o use the land more productively. It is a waste of food and land to feeding cattle.
