Not to mention, the flood of anti-communist rhetoric through news and media. Anytime a nation develops weapons of mass destruction, they become a threat. Let’s face it; Weapons of that magnitude are built to be used on other nations, not that of the nation that builds it. Russia was the active driving force of communism and had the weaponry to back it up. America’s fears of communist takeover were justified.
In conclusion the Cold War was caused by U.S. fear of the spread of communism and other events. The United States means of control was to contain communism at all cost. Many treaties were put in place to protect the two superpowers. The Soviet Union tried to influence other nations with communism and the United States tried with democracy. This battle of the superpowers lasted for fifty years.
After WW2 tensions between the United State and the Soviet Union tightened resulting in what is known as the Cold War. Although the seeds of this rivalry were planted nearly a quarter of a century before its actual commencement with the Revolution of 1918 in Russia, the tension was also driven through occasions such as the Yalta Conference and resulted in proxy wars throughout the world and a Second Red scare in America. This period was full of tension and fear that the United States and the USSR would destroy each other and the world with their arsenals of atomic weapons. During his office as a Senator, McCarthy claimed that there were numerous communist subversives and Soviet (Russian) spies in the federal government and elsewhere in the nation. McCarthyism is a political movement inspired by Joseph McCarthy himself to accuse many people of being communist subversives or Soviet spies without concrete evidences. The reason why McCarthy started to track communists is because he thought that communism was an ominous threat to the nation. McCarthyism closely resembles the witch-hunting era of the 1600s portrayed by Arthur Miller through his piece of literature, The Crucible.
