Introduction to Industrial and Systems Engineering Industrial and systems engineering is an application of engineering expertise from the scientific management development. Definition and Subfield of ISE “Industrial and systems engineering is concerned with the design, improvement, installation of integrated systems of people, materials, information and equipment, and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.”(It is a formal definition of industrial and systems engineering that have been adopted by the Institute of industrial Engineering) Industrial and systems engineering is a comprehensive field of engineering. All human or non-human participate in the activities, as long as movement occurs. It can apply the principles of industrial engineering and a set of systematic techniques to achieve the goal. Industrial and systems engineering is operation sequence. It needs to analyze all the actions into one tiny unit. The procedure is to remove unnecessary action and merge all connected action, in order to achieve simplification, motion economy and time-saving labor purpose. “Industrial and Systems Engineers design systems at two levels, which are human activity systems and management control systems. Human activity systems are focus on the physical workplace which human activity occurs. Management control systems are concerned with the procedures for planning, measurement, and controlling all activities within the management performance” (Turner, Wayne C). The Industrial and systems engineering departments are divided into production operations, management systems and corporate services. Production operation includes process and facility, methods
