Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children and young People’s settings. .1. Understand and the implications of duty of care 1.1. Define the term ‘DUTY OF CARE’. Answer: Duty of care means that al health and social care professional and organisation providing health and care service, must act in the best interest of the people they support. As a health care professional you have to ensure that you do not do something or fail to do something that cause harm or leaves the individual to exploitation. Your duty of care underpins everything that you do. It is what underlines the code of practice. Duty of care is also a legal requirement, and is tested in court in case of negligence or malpractice. This does not mean that you should be worried about being sued, but instead recognise that you’re responsible for the welfare of a vulnerable person. This responsibility is not yours alone but your employers too. 1.2. Describe how the duty of care affects own work. Answer: people have a right to expert that when professional is providing support, they will be kept safe and not are neglected or exposed to any unnecessary RISK. Thinking about the duty of care that you ‘OWE’ to people is helpful when planning you work. It makes you consider whether what you were planning to do is in the best interest of the person you consider the physical risks involved bit allows you to see if you treating them with dignity and respect.
