Our ability to communicate well with others is important to personal and professional success. The interpersonal communication course is planned to help us to become familiar with the system of effective communication, to assess our own interpersonal ability, to sharpen our critical understanding of the communication process and also to improve our interpersonal skills. It mainly assesses our interpersonal skills and puts goals for improving our communications ability. The development of self-concept and identity are examined as basics for understanding personal communication. Interpersonal communication differs from other types of communication. This report will reflect on what I have learned so far and my understanding of all the aspects of communication. It will also look at the importance of listening and hearing, barriers to effective communication and the non verbal components of communication. Beebe, Beebe and Redmond mention the importance of interpersonal communication when they say “Interpersonal communication is like breathing; it is a requirement for life. And like breathing interpersonal communication is inescapable.” (2011 p.2) From what I have learnt so far, Interpersonal communication, in my opinion, is the exchange of information verbal or non-verbal from one person to another and their understanding of it through the use of common language or symbols for the purpose of getting feedback and sharing information. It is a way of interacting and happens always at all times whether we want it to happen or not. One reason we engage in interpersonal communication is so that we can gain knowledge about another individual. We can better predict how they will think, feel, and act if we know who they are. We gain this information passively, by observing them; actively, by having others engage them; or interactively, by engaging them ourselves. The words we
