Owens Aspects of Interpersonal Communication COM: 200 Interpersonal Communication Ashford University Jacey Coy Saucedo August 17, 2009 Interpersonal Communication 2 Communication is the transmission of messages from a sender to a receiver. Interpersonal communication is the exchange of information in such a way that you create a common basis of understanding and feeling. The main objective of the sender is to translate a message into terms that is easier for the sender to understand. The goal of the receiver is to listen to the message being sent, understand the message and provide feedback to the sender. During the process of communication there are many problems that may arise. Different kinds and types and barriers inhibit communication, such as internal and external conflicts. Culture and gender, both have an effect on communication and the way that it is interpreted. Misconceptions about communication also have a profound effect on the process of communication. During the process of communication, there are plenty of distractions that can occur. Barriers to effective communication can be a result of many different types of stimuli(Allyson & Bacon, 2004). Most communication barriers are the result of personal attitudes, habits or preferences that can easily be changed (http://users.encs.concordia.html). Factors that aid to barriers can be external, internal or semantic (Hybels & Weaver, 2007). External barriers can come as a result of environmental or visual distractions. Internal barriers usually come from within the person, either the sender or receiver. Semantic barriers come from uncontrollable forces such as the differences in language, culture and education (Hybels & Weaver, 2007). External distractions can range from not being able to see someone to not being able to hear someone. Take
