Martyrs: St. Cecelia and Thomas Cranmer People say that dedication to something is an important attribute to have in life. Now this could be referring to an activity, such as a sport, or goal that one is striving to achieve. Then there is a dedication to one’s beliefs or in other words one’s religion. Many say that they are a follower of their religion but they are not truly dedicated because most people do what they want instead of following the guidelines of their religion. Then there is the people who don’t put in the time and effort to grow as a believer in their religion, like not wanting to pray, go to church or study up and learn more about what they believe in.
Those who are the minority or the outcast then tend to hide behind a shadow, afraid to show who they really are, and stand up for what they believe in. In Macklemore’s music video “same love”, he uses significant objects of history and current day to create juxtapositions in civil rights, and religion. These juxtapositions beg the question; why does Macklemore use these strong figures like Martin Luther King, and the bible? Why not use someone like Malcolm X or Tupac? Macklemore starts his argument relating gay rights to the civil rights at (2:28) where he purposefully puts clips of a significant black women in history, the American flag flowing in the wind, a burning cross, a clip from war, and a young African American holding a sign stating “we believe in the supreme court”.
Jackson does this through his use of both literary and musical techniques. Firstly, Hinton uses jargon in ‘’Like hell you will, I ain’t ever goin’ back there again’’. This not only emphasises the context of the story, but also allows the responder to understand Mark’s attitude towards Bryon and how this has changed since the beginning of the story. It also emphasises the break down in their relationship and shows how Mark’s actions have caused this to happen. Hinton also uses metaphor in ‘’He laughed then, and his eyes were the golden…and this is now’’.
The vision needs to be so clear, and the body needs to unite as one towards the goals of that vision, otherwise it will just fail. I love the clarification Pue gives on self-awareness. I think we’re ingrained as church leaders to be hesitant when anything tells us that we need some kind of focus on ourselves. I know I was hesitant when I first saw the title of
One aspect of the Native American’s culture that is especially relevant is their music. Native American music is unlike any European’s; to them it is spiritual and not meant for the sole purpose of entertainment. To them, music can do anything from healing someone’s battle wounds to bringing back the spirits of long lost ancestors for their words of wisdom. Each tribe has different styles and instruments they use to conduct their music. The three main styles that seem most relevant are the Sioux Grass Dance, the music of the Zuni tribe and the Iroquis Quiver Dance.
Of the many topics in the introduction and the essay it was difficult to pick out certain aspects that I thought were more interesting, or one that caught my eye. There is statement in the essay that talks about “being loved and loving another are the two most powerful and character-transforming experiences of life.” However bold this statement may be, I do have to agree with it. My Christian principles originally made me question this statement because I felt that God was being left out of the ability to change character. It just seemed to me, because we are talking about films and people, that this statement was biased toward humans; however, I realized this statement works for even the religious aspects of life. Because love can be supernatural as well it is very easy to understand that “being loved and loving another” are the most powerful character-transforming experiences that we will come across.
nful Also, I think this trend is on the speedy rise because not much attention is given to it in the church today for fear of indirectly driving away and losing our already handful members. Jesus didn't change to be like the world to gain audience and followers? He stuck to who He was and yet still made a marvelous impact. Why then do we want to conform to the world in our quest to make them disciples and followers of Christ? The church is built on Christ Jesus, and not on people.
A Cosmopolitan Controversy Patriotism is devotion, love and support to ones country. Cosmopolitanism is freedom from provincial or national ideas. People have different feelings and devotions surrounding these two ideas, making for a very interesting debate. Richard Rorty argues that, “Most of us, despite our feelings about government, identify with our countries.” In Rorty’s script he makes sure to highlight his point that Americans need Patriotism to accurately judge our communities and ourselves. Fixed the sentence structure of the last two sentences to make it easier to read and so that the reader won’t have to go bad and read it again to understand.
One of the many reasons that home school parents feel passionate about home schooling is their religious beliefs. Since religion is no longer permitted in the public school system, many home-school parents feel that their children have been short-changed in this area. It is their wish to raise their children in an environment that not only allows religion but also embraces it. Having deep religion beliefs, parents who home-school for religious reasons are said to be very passionate people. It is this passion that feeds their children’s educational needs.
Another issue they have is marketing; everything is done through word of mouth by the church and doesn’t allow them to reach the vast majority of people. Without clearly defining their target market they rely on people of the Catholic Church as their only customers. Another issue they may face is that they are trying to obtain more land while also not generating enough profit. To me it seems like they are planning to far ahead before they become well established. Its like they need to learn to crawl before they can walk.
