Organization Security and the Internet CMGT/579 CIS Risk Management Organization Security and the Internet The Internet is a communications network that interconnects computers and other network devices around the world. Many individuals and organizations contributed to the introduction of the Internet. However, many in the industry consider the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) to be the first to develop a networking resource that has evolved into the Internet known today. A Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) project chartered to develop a communication system to enable the exchange of military information between mainframes created the ARPANET (Whitman & Mattord, 2005). According to Miniwatts Marketing Group (2011), 30 percent of the world's population, or 2.095 million people, use the Internet. Although the Internet may appear to be a user-friendly resource in that it facilitates communications among countless individuals and computers, it lacks true security to protect a business's resources and information. The purpose is to examine how the Internet affects an organization's information technology (IT) security and proposes solutions to mitigate those problems without restricting user access entirely. Internet Security Issues Businesses leverage the Internet to communicate and share information. However, users should not take for granted that their communications and data are secure. According to the Reference for Business (2011), “[o]ne of the basic truths behind Internet security is that the Internet itself is not a secure environment" (Internet Security). According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center's (IC3) 2010 Internet Crime Report, there were almost 303,809 Internet crime complaints filed with 9.1 % of these constituting reports of computer crimes.
