How has the Internet Negatively Impacted People’s Lives? Since its modest beginnings in the 1960s, the Internet has become one of the greatest phenomenas of the decade. The Internet, then called ARPANET, began as a government-decreed project conducted by America’s Advanced Project Agency aimed at providing the American government with an effective means of communicating with its several branches. Today, the Internet is “a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.” The incredible progress the Internet has fueled in areas of entertainment, communication, research...etc. has led to a massive increase in the number of Internet users in the last decade. However, in many cases, people’s enthusiasm is so grand, they are blinded from the disadvantages of the Internet. This essay will argue against the impact the Internet has had on people’s lives by exploring the negative social, ethical, educational and economic effects it has had in the last decade. The Internet’s role in threatening the safety of young people will also be investigated. One of the greatest disadvantages of the Internet is the negative social effects it has had, or how it has harmed society’s ability to function. People are innately impatient and demanding, however, in the imperfect real world, they must learn to overcome these character flaws. On the other hand, the Internet nourishes these natural tendencies, because it instantaneously provides people access to an almost infinite variety of activities and information. As a result, many people view the cyber-world as a better alternative to reality, and often develop a strong addiction to the Internet. As they have grown more dependent on the Internet and spent greater amounts of time online, their face-to-face interaction
