With advancements in technology, some students have chosen to complete their schoolwork through the Internet, rather than in traditional classrooms. Those who support a traditional classroom approach to learning argue that it provides more of an opportunity for students to interact with the teacher and other students. Those who feel that learning over the Internet is better argue that it allows students to learn anytime and anywhere they choose. For example, you can download pictures, videos and music that are related to your homework. Students can choose websites such as Wikipedia, YouTube and Dictinoary.com to help them study. Internet is like a second teacher for most students. About 98% of high school students in North America have used computers to do researches for their homework. Surfing on internet give students freedoms to study in different ways.
Teachers and professors have little control over what their students are doing on their laptops, thus it is a distraction for them too, as stated also by Elena Choy about the upraised laptop lids and how the teacher wouldn’t have any eye contact with them. Without laptops the teacher can tell immediately whether or not their students are paying attention. However if some of the students are working on laptops it is impossible to teach in front of the class and be assured that they are paying proper attention to the lesson or really into that solitaire game. Additionally, if students are encouraged to use laptops then their handwriting skills will seriously suffer. They say practice makes perfect.

However, text messaging has been a major problem with students texting in class interfering with the disruption of their learning. Most teachers express how they feel about cell phones being a distraction to others, however very few students have complaints about the use of cell phones in class. Text messaging in class should be allowed by choice of the students, it can easily be discreet and the possibility of an emergency. Using the internet as a learning resource is somehow more efficient than books when it comes to time. But when it comes to reliability, books are still the best options for us to research since anybody can write, edit, and publish an article on the Web. Internet helped us to communicate with the ones we loved especially those who are far from us.

Parents and authorities are worried about what they can do to avoid crimes in school settings because this problem leads to many lost lives and hurt people like the one massacre of the innocent students at Sandy Hook School in Connecticut. This is just one reason for which the school authorities should be allowed to search student lockers to keep schools safe for all
Andrew Goldstein may have stated his points in a logical way, but Elena Choy’s wisdom not only responds to the statements that Goldstein has said, but she has even gone so far to provide other reasons to why students take advantage of the laptops. Andrew Goldstein explains how laptops are a distraction in the classroom for several reasons. First, the upraised lids prevent professors from making eye contact; second, students can’t help but see the screens of their fellow peers; third, the use of laptops prevents the student from thinking; and finally, it prevents the student from joining in on in class discussions, because they are so imbedded into copying what the professor has said, therefore committing stenography. At the beginning I found myself agreeing with his statements, but that was before reading the other half of this argument. In this other half of the argument it not only changed my opinion, but it also gave me a bigger picture of why banning laptops, is not a solution.
The Internet is the leading distractor in young students and adults. A few other causes include Social networks, gaming, and television play a huge toll in student’s schedules and are pushing into studying time. Little do students know that the internet has assisted with spotting someone else’s work within theirs, “with the rise of the Internet, cheating has become easier--and easier to detect” States McCollum. (McCollum, S. 2002). Procrastinating is also a sign that the student does not take an interest in the subject or feel they do not need to put as much effort because they feel they are already educated enough to pull off the assignment in a short period of time leading to stress factors that also change the quality of the work.
