You have plenty of locations and if you firmly believe in your company culture, than those who come work for you will stay. Overstaffing vs. understaffing Being a retail chain of stores I believe that during down season it would be better to be understaffed since you are not as large as other retailers and cannot afford to waste money. However, during high season you should overstaff since you want to maintain that great and comfortable experience for your customers that you are well known for. This is another reason for having a flexible workforce. Short vs. long-term focus In the case of short or long term focus when it comes to employment, it is my opinion that it depends on what you are looking for.
For a company to retain talent it must offer more incentives for the employees than that of its competitors. Your company encourages the decisions and ideas of the employees but more programs could be put in place to help retain employees. Implementing a program that offers rewards for time and cost savings not only benefits the employee but also the company by projecting a positive image of employee worth to the company. Keeping the companies hiring practice on the national level is required for all employees that work in the retail stores but if there is a need for technology or manufacturing of a particular product I would recommend global labor. The ability to tap into the global labor market will make the company more competitive by being able to offer competitive prices on products due to lower overhead cost associated with the offset in the labor cost.
Workers within the function become much more knowledgeable about the function because they work amongst many different products performing the same task in each. Grouping according to product would allow the teams to become experts in the product that they are working on, allowing them to make smarter decisions based on the context of the specific product. In this situation however, I feel that grouping according to function would be smarter for production. The matrix organization around countries and products seems to be the smartest move for the company. Organizing the company’s organization around the products limits the contextual ability for
This system that is founded on the job analysis has lead to a formal structure job descriptions which is how the pay scale the company uses is put in place. Employees will step up and help the company by doing other duties or help with the duties of new positions so the company can stay competitive in the market. Companies will ask employees to do this if they have had to cut staff or if they are adding certain jobs to the company but do not want to add any more staff. In order for the company to stay competitive with other companies each company will need to have policies in place that will help and maintain what they have already established. By having these policies it will show that the company is willing to be competitive and will do what it takes to recruit and retain employees.
Even though many of the employees are able to start employment with little training, this has led to the differences in human resource practices among regional managers which counter Tanglewood’s original philosophy. • Hire Yourself or Outsource Tanglewood should ultimately focus on “hiring yourself” for their human resource functions of hiring activities such as recruiting, selecting, and employment. At the rate in which Tanglewood is growing, it will ultimately be cheaper in the long term as Tanglewood becomes a large organization. By hiring yourself, Tanglewood will also be able to build on the centralized corporate/company culture in which they are looking for. By hiring yourself the company would be more familiar with current and past experiences the company has faced with different staffing situations and they would be able to improve on any mistakes they may have had.
The targets for Tanglewood recruitment should be directly matched with candidates with similar knowledge and experience. Considering the KSAO’s of Tanglewood employees applicants should have KSAO’s closely matching. Long term employees are usually people with knowledge of the industry and/or motivation to learn and grow within the organization. Motivated candidates will maintain employment with goals of working their way up the employee chain, sales associates with aspirations of becoming management is likely to surpass his coworkers and become a long term
Employees need social interaction and a rewarding work environment. They need respect and recognition from you, and a challenging position with room to learn and move up. * Managers often overlook how important a positive work environment is for staff, and how far meaningful recognition and praise from managers can go to achieve that. Awards, recognition and praise might just be the single most cost-effective way to maintain a happy, productive work force. Finally * Outline challenging, clear career paths.
Tanglewood is a company that is also known to have an employee participation philosophy, such as; a strong base for employee participation. The HR practices reflect the historical practices that has been shared between stores since its establishment. The practice of employee participation has gained the loyalty of employees, supervisors, and managers of the company. Here lately there has been a concern of other competitors gaining an edge on Tanglewood, along with some incongruences of the practices and philosophies of the company that have been causing a few problems in the different regional locations.
