An interactive whiteboard is a large interactive display that connects to a computer and projector. The users have to control the computer using a pen, finger or other device on the board's surface. The board is typically mounted to a wall or floor stand. The interactive whiteboard device is connected to a computer through a wired medium such as USB or a serial port cable, or via a wireless connection like Bluetooth. How to operate with the interactive whiteboard device? Device driver software is usually installed onto the attached computer where it enables the interactive whiteboard to act as a Human Input Device, like a mouse. An image from the computer is then projected onto the interactive whiteboard surface from a digital projector connected to the host computer's video output. Moreover, the user can type any text input through an on-screen keyboard or handwriting recognition. The combination of mouse and keyboard emulation allows the user to control the computer display almost exclusively from the Interactive Whiteboard. There are some sensing technologies to track interaction on the screen surface, such as electromagnetic, infrared optical and laser. Some schools use interactive whiteboards as replacements for traditional whiteboards or media systems such as a DVD player and TV combination. The software will allow the teacher to keep notes and annotations as an electronic file for later distribution either on paper or through a number of electronic formats. In addition, some interactive whiteboards allow teachers to record their instruction as digital video files and post the material for review by students at a later time.
