When professionals work together in an integrated way, they put the individual at the centre of all activities to help identify their holistic needs earlier to improve their life outcomes. It is important to see safeguarding as part of a continuum, where prevention and early intervention can help children, vulnerable adults and families get back on track and avoid problems turning into a crisis. Protection is a central part of safeguarding and promoting welfare. It is the process of protecting an individual identified as either suffering or at risk of suffering significant harm as a result of abuse or neglect. 2.2 1.
Safeguarding Safeguarding is a term for the protection of people with a strong emphasis on prevention. when this refers to children many organisations could be involved within that process such as schools, social workers, GP and other medical or therapeutic services. All these may be needed to ensure the child's well-being and be a long-term help to the whole family. Safeguarding is important as it means all adults working with children have a responsibility to protect children from harm, we should always report our concerns so that the appropriate action can be taken and the right agencies involved to help resolve the issue raised. Dwelling on and ignoring our concerns only increases the risk to the child.
Policies and procedures are put in place so that there are rules and boundaries to make sure that people know how to work in the setting and what is expected of them to prevent harm and danger to others in the work setting. The Early Years Foundation framework provides assurance to parents that the early years providers that they choose will keep their children safe. There are also legal requirements that relate to welfare. These include the Childcare Act 2006. There is also a government document called ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’ that gives instructions on what must be done to ensure that children and young people are
Tassoni. P (2007) says that “we need to work as part of a team to provide a quality service for children and their parents”. We also need to work with the parents and show respect towards them and encourage parent’s involvement within the setting. Tassoni says that “early years setting will have a management structure which should clarify practitioner’s responsibilities”. A responsibility practitioners have is to make sure the health of the child is paramount this could be by preventing hazards and carrying out risk assessments and safety checks.
One key example is early intervention; they are able to intervene with a situation almost immediately depending if the evidence gathered and shared to other professionals shows the Childs safety is being compromised. Helping to promote the safeguarding legislation and “Every Child Matters”- Being safe. This way of working also provides a universal of services to support families who may be struggling with certain things e.g financial issues. Multi agencies are a formal arrangement. Some other benefits of this co-operation between different professionals help to maintain the focus on the child, while in the educational system.
* Partnership: professionals and families must work together to ensure the welfare of the children. * Participation: that the childrens wishes and feelings should be taken into account so that they can contribute to any decisions which may affect them. * Protection: Children must be protected from serious harm. The local authorities have a duty to investigate any report that a child is suffering, or likely to suffer, from serious harm. * Provision: states that services that are necessary to safeguard children shouls be provided.
Teacher are required to follow both school procedures and government guidelines when dealing with children under their care this may include referring the child or family to outside organisations such as medical professionals, social workers or even police. Social services: Social services are the local authority department who deal with family who are in any way in breach of the current legislation and may intervene on behalf of any other organisation if suspicion of harm or neglect is
Unit 505 – Working in partnership in health and social care or children and young people’s setting. 505.1 Understand partnership working 1.1 Identify the features of effective partnership working. It is important to work in partnership with others because all partner agencies can share information and concerns to create a holistic view about young people in my care when any need arises. Partnership working can help to keep the young people safe from harm and promote their welfare, to diagnose a special need in young people and get the help that is needed to the young person as soon as possible with the professional expertise of others. For effective partnership working I need to ensure that communication is clear and this can be formed between a number of organisations, agencies or individuals with a shared interest in the young person.
(M1) Discuss how policies and procedures help children and their families. A set of policies are principles, rules and guidelines formulated by an organization to reach and maintain a set of long term goals. These are normally published or placed in another form that allows for them to be wildly accessible to other organizations that will then also adopt them. By following the procedures of the policies will ensure that a point of view is held and will result in understandable steps to follow that view. When relating to the policies that affect the safety and lives of children and young people, these normally focus on guidelines on keeping young people away from dangers and reaffirming their chance of having positive lives.
Safeguarding and promoting Children’s Welfare Every child receives and enjoys challenging learning and development experiences that meets their individual needs and make sure they are safe. Child minders must safeguard children at all times if abuse is suspected it must be reported and I must record it.
