There are many different Pharmaceutical treatments a doctor could prescribe, prescription pills called Benzodiazepine Hypnotics acts on receptors of the brain to slow down the nervous system. If your problem is getting to sleep a fast acting medication like Halcion might be prescribed, the less serious side effects could be anxiousness, blurred vision daytime drowsiness, amnesia, forgetfulness, numbness, pain, muscle weakness, headache. You should stop using this medication and see you doctor immediately if you experience weak breathing, pounding heartbeat, slurred speech, hallucinations, thoughts of hurting yourself, restless movement in eyes, tongue or jaw, pale skin or bleeding, nausea, fever, or problems urinating. If you have troubles staying a sleep medications that last longer may be needed like: Dalmane, Klonopin, Restoril, and Ativan. All of these medications can have some serious side-effects and can be addicting because of this these medications are recommended much less as time has moved on and more studies have been done. Non-Benzodiazepine Hypnotics work on the receptors also and are thought to have a lower risk of dependence. To lower the risk of dependence doctors will prescribe these medications for 3 to 4 weeks at a time. To discontinue long term use it should be under doctor supervision because patient may have withdrawal symptoms. Some Non-Benzodiazepine Hypnotics are Ambien, Lunesta, and Sonata. The side-effects are similar to the Benzodiazepine Hypnotics but less severe. Some Sedating Antidepressants given in a low dose can be used to help people who are suffering from insomnia. They help reduce the amount of time it takes for the person to fall asleep, allows a deeper uninterrupted sleep. Typically the older drugs are used for this purpose they carry
