There are many types of journeys but each will have something in common. A physical journey is very simple. It requires a physical change, such as a movement from one place to another or dying your hair from blonde to black. It has a beginning, a catalyst or an element of change and an ending. Inner journeys are much more complex. They are journeys of the mind. They can be anything from a change of one perspective on life to another to or a change in your personality or state of mind that has been made on knowledge you gained in a physical journey! The inner journey can be undertaken quickly in a few minutes an hour or a day or extend for months or years on end. My related text is called Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (千と千尋の神隠し) which literally translates as Sen and Chihiro’s spiriting away. In the English version the movie is simply called Spirited Away. It was written and animated by Hayao Miyazaki (宮崎 駿) , founder of Studio Ghilbi. It was released in Japan in 2001. The inner journey revealed in Spirited Away is the journey of Chihiro, who at the beginning of her journey was a whining, pessimistic child, and how she learns to grow more mature when her circumstances push her to do so. Chihiro’s journey begins when her family is driving from the city to the suburbs to their new home when her father decides to take a short cut on an old forest road. Chihiro is portrayed as stubborn and immature, like a little child, with the animation angled looking down on her, hunched in her seat with a pouting lip. Her mother and father leave the car when they almost hit a stone statue of a dragon guarding a tunnel. Her father decides to explore and this crossing of the dark tunnel is Chihiro’s crossing into the “special world”. Once through the tunnel they come to an
