Brand New Our lives are filled with a plethora of new and reoccurring experiences that although many of them seem generic are all unique to each and every one of us. How we define a “new” experience is mostly dependent on if we have experienced it in person and not on how much we know or have heard about that experience. Humans are unique in that we all experience things differently because of our personalities, emotions, and backgrounds. Walker Percy provides a different perspective on what really is “new” and on the human experience in his article The loss of the Creature. Percy argues that having a packaged idea of something can cause you to create a symbolic amalgam of ideas about that thing that can block the true essence of the real experience when you actually do experience it for yourself.
It is the length of time the information has to be retained that is important. The longer the time, the more the memory trace decays and as a consequence more information is forgotten. There are a number of methodological problems confronting researchers trying to investigate the trace decay theory. One of the major problems is controlling for the events that occur between learning and recall. Clearly, in any real-life situation, the time between learning something and recalling it will be filled with all kinds of different events.

Also what is different in the film is that it seems like Connie and her parents are trying to work out their problems and discussing them. Also Connie communicates with her sister more so in the movie than in the short story. Joyce Carol Oates makes the short story more dark and spooky compared to Smooth Talk. In the end of the film it continues on after she is taken away with Arnold. In the short story it ends right when she gets in the car with Arnold which creates a more eerie and suspicious kind of feel.
