The Legislative Branch consists of the Senate and House of Representatives. Checks and balances create independence amongst the Judicial, Executive, and Legislative branches of the U.S. government. Examples of checks and balances include the Presidential veto of a Congressional bill, the Congressional impeachment of the President, or the Judicial ruling of Congressional laws that violate the U.S. Constitution. It is derived from a Constitutional interpretation of Article II of the U.S Constitution claiming that power is given to the President and only he has the right to execute law in the executive branch. As American politics has changed, so has the power of the president.
