Cuba Que bolá, asere? Or in words that might be more familiar to you, “what’s up friend?” It is my pleasure to present to you a fascinating country in hopes that you will learn something you did not know about Cuba. Prepare yourself to be taken on a journey as we explore Cuba. We will explore the government, geography, economy, and culture of Cuba. Government Cuba is a Communist country with fifteen provinces. Cuba has three branches of Government: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. The Executive Branch enforces the law, the Legislative Branch (known as the National Assembly of Peoples Power) makes the laws, and the Judicial Branch carries out the law (Wright). There are more than 900 reported species of fish, more than 410 species of sponges and corals, more than 350 different species of birds, 15 species of snakes, and 90 species of trees (Sainsbury 80). Although all of these organisms are studied closely and watched for, birds are the main animal of Cuba. Seventy of the 300 species of birds found in Cuba are indigenous. One of these includes the world’s smallest bird, measuring 6.5cm (slightly longer than a toothpick). In 1992, the constitution was amended and abolished Atheism as the country’s religion (Cuba). During this time the Communist Party also lifted its ban on people who had religious beliefs and allowed them to join the party (Cuba) . The largest religion in Cuba is the Roman Catholic Church. There are also Protestants, Baptists, Jews, Muslims, Baha’i and Mormons (Cuba). There are very strict regulations on how the religions can operate. The religion must be recognized through the Ministry of Justice, the meeting places must be approved, the imports of religious products are strictly controlled, broadcasting of religious groups is strictly controlled, religious education is not permitted in public schools, and private schools are not allowed (Cuba). These regulations make it hard to learn and practice your faith which is why most Cubans are not Practicing Catholics or practice privately
