Informative Speech Purpose: To inform the audience about Howard Hughes. Thesis: Today I will discuss facts about Howard Hughes. Specifically I will discuss his inventions, movies, and his eccentric lifestyle. Who is Howard Hughes? Howard Hughes is an American aviator, industrialist, film producer/director and philanthropist. He has set multiple air-speed records and won numerous awards including the Congressional Gold Medal. He was also well known for his eccentric and compulsive behavior. Next I will discuss his Inventions. Hughes was a lifelong aircraft enthusiast pilot and aircraft engineer. Operating from Hughes Aircraft at the Glendale Airport he built one of the most technological important aircraft of its time, the H-1 racer. The H-1 Racer set an air-speed record of 352mph over a test course near Santa Anna, CA in 1936. Although his record was broken two times that year, a year later in January 19, 1937 he redesigned the H-1 Racer and set a new transcontinental air-speed record. He flew nonstop from Los Angeles to New York in 7 hours 28 minutes and 25 seconds. The H-1 Racer influenced the design of a number of World War II fighters including the Mitsubishi Zero, Focke-Wulf Fw 190,and the F8F Bearcat. Although never confirmed the H-1 racer was donated to the Smithsonian in 1975 and put on display at the National Air and Space Meuseum. Next I will discuss his movies. Howard Hughes was born into a wealthy family and when his parents passed in 1925 he had 75 percent of his family business. It was never known exactly how much he inherited at that time but it was said to be well above 20 million which made him one of the wealthiest men in the U.S. In 1926 at the age of 19 Hughes dropped out of Rice University and moved to Hollywood where he hoped to make it in the movie business.
