High School English Teacher General Purpose: To Inform Specific Purpose: To inform the audience how to understand the steps involved in becoming a high school English Teacher. Organizational Pattern: Time (steps to teaching) I. INTRODUCTION A. Attention Getter: In today’s high school classrooms, English seems to be dying a slow and painful death. Kids are bored, and if it’s not digital, they want nothing to do with it. The caveat? Most digital information is written, so if they can’t read and write well, they’re going to be in big trouble. This suggests a major need for qualified English teachers who will think outside of the box and can help students regain interest in the written word! B. Relevance to Audience: The Occupational Outlook Handbook in 2010 indicates that highly qualified teachers will continue to be in demand for years to come, particularly as the education system continues to evolve. C. Credibility Statement: As a parent, the sister of a teacher and a long-time student of the written word, education and English are both areas of interest to me. In addition to my own background, I did additional research to solidify my existing knowledge on the subject. D. Thesis Statement: The choice to become an English teacher will mean taking three important steps to ensure that you are qualified and equipped to teach high school students. These include: receiving a quality education at an accredited college, student teaching in a classroom environment, and becoming licensed in the state you will teach in. TRANSITION: Before you can even consider stepping into the classroom, you must plan to obtain a college degree from an accredited school. II. BODY A. To become a teacher, you must complete your education in a school recognized by the state in which you wish to be licensed. 1. A Bachelors Degree
