ICT’s can certainly be innovatively used in the absence of minimum literacy levels among the poor. Some examples of how they could be used are: Where communities cannot afford televisions, radios or computers, these can be made available (with the assistance of a facilitator) within a community information centre for the following purposes * Adult education on health, hygiene, nutrition as well as skills development programs (for example sewing, basket weaving or farming) * To provide educational programmes and games to children * Movies and entertainment for families A community health centre (with a trained facilitator) can make e-Health available to community members. A solar powered projector can be used to facilitate learning in a classroom. Q2: How can the same ICTs be used for multiple purposes? Television can be used for the following multiple purposes: * Education – educational programs for children (to collaborate with their school syllabus). Educational programs for adults related to health, nutrition, agriculture and skills development * News – weather forecasts (to assist farmers) and local & global current affairs * Entertainment – movies, music and sport Radio can be used for the following multiple purposes: * Education – educational programs for children (to collaborate with their school syllabus).
