Information systems have impacted my life in many ways over the past three months. According to Management Information Systems: Managing the Digital Firm, eleventh edition by Kenneth Laudon and Jane Laudon, an information system can be defined technically as a set of interrelated components that collect, process, store, and distribute information to support decision making and control in an organization. Firstly, with the use of the World Wide Web, it makes the researching easier. This is so as instead of searching through books and encyclopaedias, it is much faster and simpler to go on a search engine such as Google or Bing and type in any question and millions of hits are loaded within seconds. I use Google all the time to assist me with my projects and other school work. Secondly, through social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Skype, they can be used as a means of communication. I use Facebook to communicate with friends and family locally and abroad. Better yet when I use Skype to have a video conversation with my friends and family abroad as it is cheaper to call via Skype and it has its advantages of seeing the other person while talking to them, providing they have a webcam. Thirdly, I have a Nokia Smartphone which allows me to connect to Wi-Fi when available. This allows me to have web access and it makes it easier to access my email and information from the internet. It also allows me to access the various social networks so I’m never out of touch. Through the use of Nokia’s OviStore, there are countless applications, some free and some you need to pay for, that can be downloaded to enhance your Smartphone. Lastly, online education and distance learning have given a new dimension to the field of education and higher learning.
