I can honestly say that the teacher in the classroom did a great job with her students and I will be walking away with a bunch of awesome strategies and resources to take back to my own classroom to help with teaching reading and language arts. Before this interview, I defined a school counselor as someone who provides guidance to help with the development of a child academically and socially. However, I learned this is still their philosophy but their duities have changed. As I interviewed, Ms. Childs a counselor from the Cypress-Fairbanks school district, I truly understood the difference between the role of a counselor and their duties. She has wanted to be a counselor since the third grade. She had an excellent elementary school counselor and always remembered her as being the nicest person on campus.
ITERS Observation Doing the ITERS observation was a great experience and I learned a lot from it. First, I confirm that I really want to work with infant and toddlers. Second, I appreciate how important is to have a good and adequate environment. Third, to observer how the teacher and stuff put in practice, all what I have learned so far in class. It was my first time in an Infants/toddlers classroom; it was a great opportunity for me to see all the developmental areas that children can explore every day in the classroom and specific the child – teacher relationship.
I even cheer them on when they struggle with a task. To develop a sense of independence and pride, I let the children each day choose the classroom helpers. There are many tasks that the children are able to choose from. I structure the environment to offer opportunities for children to share information about themselves, their families, and experiences. I make it easier for the children to explore new experiences and the environments by making them feel assured of the support and availability of me, thus increasing his confidence.
It was only when I finally entered college that I realized I had always loved working with, and the idea of taking care of children; and what I truly wanted to do with the rest of my life was to teach children with mental disabilities. My career goal, which I have slowly been working towards throughout my 2 years in college, is to become a special education teacher for elementary students. I am currently signed up as double major in elementary and early childhood education and psychology in Queens College. I have taken many pre-requisite classes, as well as several courses specifically designed for elementary education. These courses allowed me to be taught by actual elementary school teachers, who have years of experience with working with children, and the knowledge and advice they were able to pass on truly helped me better understand what I was signing up for as an education major, and helped my improve the way I teach so that I could articulate in a way that would be comprehensible to students of a young age.
I wanted to make my parents proud because of what I was doing. I want to be able to provide for my kids in ways my parents couldn’t always afford too and that’s when I started looking into it more thoroughly. I ended up coming into realization that being a Medical Assistant was also something that started to interest me. I love helping people and meeting new people as well. I work in a place where I see new faces every day, it’s always nice to interact with them and learn a little bit about them in just a matter of a few seconds.
Kathleen went to school to become a nurse practitioner when Becka turned one, and Brent took care of her during the day while Kathleen went to school. He worked as a custodian in the evenings. They have advocated strongly for Becka’s inclusion in the general education classroom, sometimes needing to threaten the schools with mediation. However, the schools and Becka’s family have finally recognized the value of her placement, and have seen significant growth in Becka’s social and academic outcomes. Becka has one younger brother, Alex, who is in the first grade, and who is progressing well through the general curriculum.
In addition, every Saturday she attended a community college to tutor kids with special needs. Gloria loved working with these kids, and making them feel better about themselves, she was willing to help out in any way that she could. The experience that has given me the biggest sense of ‘Firebird Pride’ is my time in National Honor Society. I truly enjoy giving back to the community and school that has given me so much. Through working with students my own age to senior citizens to citizens of Dayton in homeless shelters, I have realized how blessed I am to have all of the opportunities that have arisen during my high school career. I am a stronger leader, a better community member, and a more patient and understanding person because of the service I have provided throughout my time in NHS. Through the tutoring hours put into this group, I have formed bonds with students I never would have otherwise been around and the relationships with these kids and their parents have made me feel like I have had my own impact on the community.
The teachers were exhilarating, helpful and most importantly I could sense that they enjoyed what they were doing. It wasn’t every year that I had an experience like this but there were a few more exceptional years to follow in which my teachers were phenomenal! My forgotten quest of becoming a teacher had once again been ignited through these experiences. This further fueled my quest for becoming a teacher. After my school years were long behind me I entered into motherhood which brought on a gambit of issues regarding education.
