Influences on Language and Change over Time In the ever-changing and developing world there are numerous factors which affect one’s speech, syntax, register etc. These vary from person to person and can be expected to change as they grow older because language is continuously is evolving. The main influences on my language choices are conversations with friends, conversations with relatives, and blogs. Tumblr, a blogging site, is one of the main influences on my language. Tumblr allows bloggers to interact with each other sharing images, videos, thoughts and more. Through the use of Tumblr and interacting with Tumblr bloggersI have started using “:3” (a type of smiley) when I find something cute or pleasing. Tumblr has also resulted in me using the tilde (~) as a replacement for the full stop since it is not as abrupt as a full stop.This makes what I want to say seem more free flowing and light hearted. Another change in my written language that was influenced by Tumblr is the changing of spelling of certain words such “girl” which I now write as “qurl” and “guys” which I now write as “guise”. Tumblr supports .gif files as a result of this when I would like to emphasize a point a .gif file is used. Although Tumblr has mainly altered my written language my spoken language has been influenced slightly as well. On Tumblr, like on Twitter, it is possible to tag posts. In my spoken language I have started saying “Hash tag”. For example, while talking to a friend, if I wanted to express my concern regarding something I would say “Hash tag concerned about you”. After a nearly a year of having a Tumblr account my written language choices have been altered greatly and my spoken language slightly as it was conversation with friends that changed this.
