He agreed with his friend, and said under the sway of the machine, he “changed arguments to aphorisms, from thoughts to puns, from rhetoric to telegram style.” The story suggests that the Internet isn’t the sole reason for changing the way of thinking, but possibly technology in general. To go along with this thought, Carr also mentions how television, magazine, and newspaper ads have started using our new methods of absorbing information to create a compact and to-the-point advertisement design, further proving how our mind states have been
What I found most challenging about this project is using ethos, pathos, and logos to critically analyze my selected advertisement. I overcame this by doing lots of research on what ethos, pathos, and logos are and reading example essays and papers using them. From composing this project I learned how to correctly compose a text analysis and how to use the rhetorical triangle and disruption to analyze it in-depth. For the revision of this paper for the final portfolio version I am going to go back and correct any grammatical mistakes I and my peer reviewer might have missed. I am also going to add more citations that I forgot to add and try to add information to get an extra page.
I would start out letting him know I would be glade to help him and that I can help him. I would explain that the default settings on his PowerPoint are different than the one in the Libraries but that we can fix this with the following steps: 1. Open the presentation 2. Click on font arrow in the right corner 3. Then click on the setting he wants This should take care of the font changes, for the speed of the transition he needs to do the following: 1.
There are many factors that can affect the way we speak such as: age, gender, familiarity, background, friendship groups and education. Another factor that can affect our language is the media. For example through T.V programmes and the internet many teenagers have picked up words such as ‘dude’, ‘OMG’ or ‘fail’ etc. By observing my language I realised that I have adopted these words and use them often in casual conversation. It has been especially noticed by my friends that I use the word ‘dude’ very frequently, this could be due to the fact that American phrases are being passed on more easily than before through the internet, making it easier for teenagers to pick up.
There already existed a range of theories covering the difference between CMC and face-to-face communication before Walther showed up with SIP. With his theory he tries to explain why relationships can grow just as strong within CMC as with face-to-face communication. I am going to apply his theory to some of my own CMC experiences and also dig deeper into why CMC works just as good as any communication form. When i was in my “Tweens” i used to instant-text-message a lot through a computer program called MSN. On this program this program i had a lot of contacts.
The ease of information and immediacy of it presented by the World Wide Web is simply changing the world’s reading culture. The absurd effects may be much more than the author has focused on, but the loss of concentration is one of them. Given that internet use is likely to increase, I am in support of his suggestion; studies need to be conducted to examine the extent of the damage the internet has caused on global reading culture. The article is well written, thesis well researched, and the theme is easy to establish. Nicholas Carr has succeeded in prompting his readers to consider whether Google is making us stupid.
I feel that, overall, the results of my MBTI were correct. I possess many of the qualities described above. In the Extraverted characteristics there is, Act first, think/reflect later, for example I don’t think before I do things and that usually leads to consequences. Feel deprived when cutoff from interaction with the outside world, for example getting rid of my facebook and twitter. Enjoy wide variety and change in people relationships, for example meeting new people, and making new friends.
The quote “We’ve all had to rewrite the scripts of our lives these last few weeks” shows the physiological change felt by the characters. By this idea I think that the author is showing the change in the mentality of the characters and by saying “script” it is showing the maturity and depth of the thought Ellie is having. The change in the character makes the book more relevant to everyday life because we all will and have gone through changes that make us who we are today and will most likely alter the way we look at a situation or our outlook on life. The portrayal of the terror felt in the warzone made me think of Iraq and how they would be physiologically damaged having to think every plane; every loud noise could be death awaiting them. The setting of the book is intriguing because it is set in a place called “Hell.” This is where the 7 teenagers go to camp for the week.
The process of socialisation has changed over time in my cultural context in certain ways, and has been continuous in others. Through agents of socialisation such as location, media and technology, a focus group of 4 people, and the generational theory by William Strauss and Neil Howe, we can see how socialisation has changed between Generation X (Nomads) and Generation Y (Civics). This theory explained that there is a cycle, due to parenting styles, of generations; Adaptives, Idealists, Nomads and Civics, and how they behave and grow into society with common attributes for the same generational types for years and years. Location was very different from my mother’s generation to mine. I grew up in ---------, and my mum grew up right across the street.
When we mention social media, many of us think of the recent uses such as Snapchat, with the filters and recording. YouTube, with the recent news or funny cat videos. Twitter, where many follow others for jokes or just to share how their day had been, many times it is where people get their news. Maybe an online game where a friend had been made and ended up being the closest thing to comfort, or as people prefer to put it, a small gap to forget the problems in reality. There are many pros and cons to social media, many of us like to see the positive side, where social media is able to spread word of an incoming disaster in minutes.
