Throughout the last century the television has became a major part of our society. Over this time period it has gradually made its way into every household and many other places of interest were people come together to spend their time. Many people see the television as a way to pass time, or maybe they use it as an educational tool to further educate themselves. What people may not realize is how the television has become a major component for the spread of consumerism in our society. There are many things that are shown on television that help do this without many people realizing the problem with what they are watching. As you watch television we have gradually seen the increase in commercials to help spread consumerism. These play a major role in the way people think and heavily influence what people in fact do. No matter what you watch you will see commercials for products that someone wants you to buy. These commercials are a great marketing tool for major companies and the more you watch them the more you will want something. These companies pay millions of dollars to make sure they get prime air time so that more people are tuned in to see these products. One example of this is the hype of the Super Bowl and how major companies such as Pepsi pay an enormous amount of money to be shown. They completely understand the influence commercials have on the consumers in America while watching television. Basically, these are played over and over again brainwashing the consumer to think they need something to be better off when in fact it is just a want that is totally unnecessary in their lives. While commercials make people see things that they will eventually think they need, it also plays another role in the spread of consumerism.
