Infectious Diseases and Child Development/ Play Pretend in Toddlers Infectious Disease is one of the leading causes of child deaths in the world. A remarkable 70 percent of them. 98 percent of children death occur in under developed countries. (Berk, 2012) There is an estimated 200 million cases of children with developmental disabilities due to infectious diseases and malnutrition. (Lancet, 2007) Disease and parasites are a major reason for malnutrition to occur. These disorders limit intake of nutrients and calories when little is usually available as is. Diarrhea cause by bad drinking water and contaminated foods stunts growth and causes many deaths per year. There is a correlation between consistent diarrhea and smaller children that score lower on cognitive tests then children that are not at risk for chronic diarrhea. Many disease can be treated with medicine and vaccines but these treatments are hard to find or too expensive for many. This problem of lack of medical attention leads more diseases in children, these children then have more children passing on the poverty and risks for infections. Children in developing countries are unprotected to many hazards including poverty, malnutrition, poor health, and unstimulating home environments. These risks affect cognitive, motor, and social- emotional functions. In Zambia poor children were 4 times more likely to start school late and Uganda these children were 10 times more likely to start school late due to delayed physical and cognitive development. In a study done in rural areas of Nicaragua children with malnutrition and parasitic actives were measured and given cognitive test. This study showed that the rate of developmental disabilities and stunted growth was extremely high in this children. Many of these children had undetected health problems as well.
